Action
Activated charcoal is a very effective adsorbent of gases and other substances. It has been used for many years in the treatment of flatulence and of poisoning by alkaloids. Magnesium oxide neutralises acid; its effect is four times greater than that of sodium bicarbonate and more than twice that of magnesium carbonate. Tannic acid precipitates proteins and forms insoluble complexes with many heavy metals, alkaloids and glycosides. Kaolin is a strong adsorbent. It also adsorbs substances from the alimentary tract, including bacteria and alkaloids.
